hey sorry if this is a dumb question but im kinda freaking out right now. my sisters wedding is in two weeks and my mom handed me her old canon eos rebel t6 to take pictures since the photographer fell through! the kit lens is fine i guess but close ups look super blurry and i have no idea what Im doing. my budget is like 150 bucks max because im totally broke. im in ohio if that matters for shipping. what is the best lens i can actually afford right now that wont make me look like an idiot at this wedding?
stumbled upon this and honestly you need to grab a Canon EF 50mm f 1 8 STM right now. it's like 125 bucks brand new and way cheaper used on mpb or keh if you look today. that kit lens is garbage in low light and youll miss every reception shot without a wide aperture. just watch a couple youtube tutorials on aperture priority before the big day.
To add to the point above: over the years working with crop sensor bodies, I've found that proper glass makes all the difference in low light situations like receptions. Before committing to a purchase, are you planning to shoot strictly indoors under dim church lighting, or will there be outdoor daylight portions too? In my experience, grabbing a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is your smartest move here since it easily fits your $150 limit and fixes blur issues instantly.
oh man what a nightmare situation to be handed right before a wedding. honestly nobody should be relying on a beginner with two weeks notice and a kit lens, but since youre stuck with it we gotta make it work somehow. for that 150 dollar budget, your absolute best bet is grabbing a cheap 50mm prime lens. new ones are right around that price point and used ones are even cheaper. it lets in way more light than your kit lens and gives you that nice blurry background that makes wedding shots look professional instead of like an iphone pic. unfortunately you wont have any zoom capability so youll have to literally move your feet to frame the shot, which can be super awkward during a ceremony. i had issues with mine missing focus in dim reception lighting when i first started out, so just be aware youll need plenty of light. watch out for shutter speed too or everything is gonna be blurry again. practice outside before the big day so youre not totally panicking when people are walking down the aisle. good luck out there
