sorry if this is a dumb question but I literally just got a Canon EOS Rebel T6 off fb marketplace last week and Im super excited to start taking pics of my dogs and stuff outside... right now I just have the basic lens that came with it but it doesnt zoom in enough for when they are running around the yard. Im totally lost looking at all the numbers and millimeter stuff online. whats actually the best lens to get for a total beginner without spending a fortune? like maybe under 200 bucks if possible...

Not a dumb question at all, welcome to the hobby! For action shots of dogs running in the yard on a crop sensor like your T6, you need a telephoto zoom that provides enough reach to frame fast-moving subjects from a distance. The kit lens typically maxes out at 55mm, which is way too short for backyard sports. Looking at your sub-$200 budget, the absolute best value performer is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. You can easily find clean used copies on MPB or eBay for around 120 to 150 dollars. The STM stepping motor is noticeably quieter and faster for autofocus compared to older versions, and the optical stabilization helps keep shots sharp when you are tracking movement at the long end. Another option often mentioned is the older Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III, which frequently sells new or used for under 150 bucks. However, I generally advise against it because it lacks image stabilization and struggles significantly with autofocus speed in lower light. Sticking with the 55-250mm gives you much better sharpness across the focal range and better utility for outdoor pet photography without breaking the bank.
