Ive been shooting with Canon DSLRs for a decade so I thought I knew my way around a kit but man this jump to the R10 is stressing me out more than it should. Im trying to get ready for a local nature competition in my area next month and I need a proper macro lens that wont break my back or my bank account. My logic was to just adapt my old EF 100mm f2.8 but on this tiny R10 body it feels ridiculously unbalanced and top-heavy and Im shaking too much to get a clean shot of these tiny jumping spiders in my garden. Plus the 1.6x crop makes it feel like a 160mm which is great for distance but the working distance is getting weird and I keep bumping into branches. I was looking at the RF 85mm f2 because the price is right at like $500-600 but then I realized its only 0.5x magnification and I really need that true 1:1 life size detail for the judges to even look at my work. Then I saw the RF 35mm but I feel like Id have to be basically touching the bug to get the shot and Ill just scare them off. Does anyone actually use the Laowa 65mm on this body or is the lack of electronics a total nightmare for an APS-C setup? I just need something sharp that actually fits the scale of the R10...
To add to the point above: you should really consider how the R10's internal Focus Bracketing feature changes the game for macro. This body has a dedicated menu for automated focus shifts, but it only works with native lenses like the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. If you go with a fully manual lens, you lose the ability to stack 100+ frames automatically in-camera, which is basically a cheat code for those tiny jumping spiders. Since you mentioned the 0.5x magnification is a dealbreaker, the most efficient technical workaround is pairing that 85mm with a Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Snap-On Lens. This isnt your typical cheap close-up filter; its a high-quality triplet design that will push your magnification past 1:1 while maintaining a decent working distance. It weighs almost nothing and costs about $75, so it wont blow your budget or make the rig front-heavy. Logistically, the R10s 1.6x crop is actually a benefit here because it increases your effective magnification relative to the sensor area. Using the 85mm with the Raynox keeps your total weight under 700g, which is a massive relief compared to an adapted EF 100mm setup. You get to keep the Image Stabilization (IS) and the fast communication for bracketing, which is frankly more important for contest-level sharpness than pure native magnification specs.
Regarding what #1 said about the Laowa... its a beast but if youre on a budget, Ive found better value over the years. That R10 is so light that big lenses just feel wonky.

I actually picked up the Venus Optics Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro for my R10 a few months back and im honestly super satisfied with it. I totally get the struggle with the EF 100mm... it feels like a giant telescope on that tiny body lol. The Laowa is a manual lens, yeah, but focus peaking on the Canon EOS R10 makes it a breeze to use. Ngl, the 2:1 magnification is addictive once you get the hang of it. You get way more detail than the standard 1:1 stuff. It's really light and balances perfectly. For about $400, it basically saved my macro hobby because I was getting frustrated with the weight too. Definitely worth a look if you can live without autofocus, which you dont really use for serious macro anyway tho. Let me know if you need help with the camera settings to get it working!
