Ive been shooting weddings with my R6 for a couple years now and honestly I love this body so much. But my trusty old EF 85mm 1.8 just bit the dust during a session in Seattle last weekend and Im super stoked to finally upgrade to native RF glass! My budget is around 1500 bucks and I mainly need it for outdoor bridal portraits where that dreamy subject separation is everything. Im totally torn between grabbing the RF 85mm f2 macro or saving up a bit longer for something faster, plus I keep hearing mixed things about focus breathing. Which one should I actually buy right now?
Honestly, since your budget sits around fifteen hundred and you need that dreamy outdoor separation, skip the slower macro glass and look at alternatives. Focus breathing wont even matter much for stills anyway. For outdoor bridal work, I am completely satisfied with the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG HSM Art adapted with the Canon control ring adapter, or saving just a bit more for native options.
- Incredible background blur for portraits
- Sharp wide open where it counts
- Fits nicely within your price range if you go adapted Really works well in real-world lighting conditions without breaking the bank.
Totally agree with the adapter route, but if you really want native RF glass without breaking the bank, grab the Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM! Yeah it is slower than an 1.4, but the IS is a lifesaver for outdoor evening sessions when light drops. Plus it is super sharp right out of the box and leaves you some cash for other gear.
