Just picked up an R50 for vlogging my travel stuff and realized the kit lens is kinda shaky for handheld shots. Im a total newbie here so sorry if this is dumb, but what is a cheap lens I can grab? My budget is like 300 bucks max. Any ideas?

Honestly, the kit lens is pretty rough for handheld stuff, I had massive issues with jitter when walking. Unfortunately, stabilization on a budget is tricky. If you want better shots, try these:

To add to the point above: honestly, I had a tough time with the kit lens too, and spending extra cash when you're already feeling let down is super frustrating. I really wanted to love the stock setup, but the jitter is just too much if you arent super steady. Since you have a 300 dollar limit, you really have to be careful with where you put your money because reliable glass usually isnt cheap. Here is what I would look at if you want to keep your budget safe:

  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM
  • This one has built-in image stabilization which is a total lifesaver for handheld stuff, though it might be slightly over budget unless you find it used.
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • This is super cheap, but just a heads up, it has no stabilization, so it wont fix your shakiness, though the low light performance is a nice step up for the price. Honestly, if I were you, I would try to save just a little more for something with IS. Buying the wrong thing twice is the worst kind of budget trap. Definitely check out used marketplaces for the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM because you might snag it for around that 300 mark if you get lucky. It feels a bit more solid than the plastic kit lens and the stabilization really helps when you are walking around travel spots.

Stumbled upon this thread and honestly, I feel your pain! I started with the kit lens and it was a total disaster for my shaky hands. I finally grabbed the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM for my travel vlogs and the difference is night and day. It is so compact and light, making it way easier to handle. Just keep your movements smooth and you will get some amazing, crisp shots for sure!
