Should I go with the Canon 55-250mm IS STM or the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro for my T7? Honestly im so frustrated right now because my kids soccer game is next month and my 18-55 kit lens is just garbage for reaching across the field. I keep getting these blurry messy shots and its driving me crazy. I only have like 250 bucks to spend max right now since we just paid for the league fees. Im leaning towards the Canon one because people say the autofocus is better but that extra reach on the Sigma sounds nice for the price. Is the Sigma actually sharp enough or am I gonna regret not getting the STM version?
You definitely want to go with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. Be careful with that Sigma because it lacks image stabilization, meaning youll likely end up with blurry shots at 300mm anyway. The STM autofocus is much faster for tracking kids. I would suggest looking for a refurbished or used one to easily stay under your budget.
Like someone mentioned, the 55-250 is awesome, but if you really want that extra reach for soccer, check out a used Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. You can grab it under budget and you get:
- Image stabilization so shots arent blurry
- Faster USM autofocus than the Sigma
- Full-frame compatibility if you upgrade later Its a bit heavier than the STM but worth a look imo.
Are the soccer games mostly during bright midday sun or later in the evening? I have no complaints with the tracking speed on the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM under good light.
