What lens should I actually get for street photography on my R5? Im stressing out because I have a trip to Tokyo in three weeks and I feel like I dont have the right glass yet. I read everywhere that the 35mm f/1.8 is the gold standard for street stuff but then I saw some forum posts saying the 50mm f/1.2 is sharper and better for portraits too. Im on a budget of like 1500 bucks so the f/1.2 is probably out unless I find a deal. Is the 35mm enough or will I regret not having more reach? I really just want something small enough that I dont look like a tourist...
Honestly, skip the 50mm for street work. I had the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM for a while and it was just too heavy to carry around Tokyo all day. My back actually started hurting by the time I hit Shinjuku. It is sharp, yeah, but it makes you look like a massive billboard for professional gear which is exactly what you dont want when trying to be candid. Grab the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM instead. It is tiny, super discrete, and honestly, the focal length is perfect for city alleys. I had issues with the autofocus hunting in low light sometimes, which was super annoying, but for the price and portability, it is still the best bet. Just keep it simple and enjoy the trip.
