I've been shooting with my T7i for two years and finally mastered manual mode but the kit lens isn't cutting it for my sister's engagement shoot next month. We're doing the photos at a local park and I need that professional bokeh look. Since it's a crop sensor I'm confused if the 50mm is best or if I should go wider to account for the magnification.

  • Budget is $300-400 tops
  • Needs to be fast for low light
  • Sharp enough for large prints
  • Good autofocus speed

Should I just grab the nifty fifty or is 85mm way too tight on this body? I'm worried I'll have to stand a mile away from them to get a full body shot...

Honestly, you'll be super happy with a 50mm on that body. I remember my first big shoot using the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM on my old Rebel and the results were totally satisfying. On your T7i, that 1.6x crop factor makes it behave like an 80mm which is basically the sweet spot for flattering faces without distortion. I tried an 85mm once for a garden party and honestly it was way too tight... I had to shout my posing instructions from across the lawn. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is also a solid pick that fits your budget and works well in low light. Quick tip: keep your shutter speed above 1/125 to avoid micro-blur when shooting wide open at these apertures. Youll do great.
