honestly i am so fed up with my old ef 50mm 1.8 on the adapter. it keeps hunting for focus and missed like half the shots at my sisters engagement party last week and i was just so embarrassed. im ready to just toss it and get something native for my r6. my logic was the rf 85mm f2 because of the price but then i saw the 1.2 and lord its expensive. i have about 900 bucks saved up and i need this sorted before my friends backyard wedding in june. would the 85mm f2 be enough or is the 50mm 1.8 rf actually any better? i feel like im just going in circles and cant decide if i should go wide or tight for outdoor shots...

I've been shooting with the R series for a while now, and honestly, don't even look at the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM if your main goal is fixing that focus hunting headache. In my experience, the RF nifty fifty is barely a step up from the old EF version when it comes to speed. It is still a buzzy motor that can get lost in low light. Since you have 900 bucks, the choice is pretty clear. Just grab the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. Over the years I've found that 85mm is basically the gold standard for weddings and outdoor portraits because of the compression it gives. The AF on the 85mm f2 is much more reliable than your current adapted setup, and the image stabilization paired with the R6 IBIS is honestly a cheat code for sharp shots. Plus, that macro feature is gonna be huge for close-ups of the rings or decor at your friend's wedding. I know the f1.2 is tempting but it is heavy as a brick and way too expensive for what most people actually need. 85mm might feel a bit tight in a small backyard, but usually you can just take two steps back and you're fine. Skip the 50mm, it is not the upgrade you're looking for. The 85 will give you that professional look without breaking the bank.
