Im stressing out because my sister's wedding is in three weeks and I promised to handle the portraits but my current zoom just isnt cutting it for that creamy background blur. I really need to nail this. Ive been eyeing the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro but then I see people talking about the RF 50mm f/1.2 L being the dream lens. Obviously the price gap is huge since my budget is around 600-800 bucks which keeps pushing me toward the 85mm or maybe a used EF 85mm 1.4 with an adapter. Is the L series glass worth waiting and saving for or will the f/2 really be enough for professional looking shots...
Honestly, skip the stress. I shot weddings for years and you dont need the f/1.2 to get pro results. The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is plenty sharp and that stabilization is a lifesaver for candids.
- Rent the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM for a weekend first to see if you actually need the bokeh.
- Check out LensRentals for cheap trials.
- Lighting and posing matter way more than the glass.
To add to the point above: absolutely go with the 85mm! It saved me so much money for my trip to Japan last summer. Best sushi ever near the fish market. Anyway lol.
