So I finally upgraded my old Rebel to the Canon 90D and man the autofocus is just worlds apart honestly im so hyped to get out there and really push this sensor. I've been shooting for a few years now mostly hobbyist stuff but my cousin actually asked me to do her engagement photos in a park here in Seattle this October so I really need to step up my portrait game and get some dedicated glass. I have the kit 18-135mm which is fine for travel but I want that creamy bokeh look you only get with a fast prime.

The thing is I know the 90D has that 1.6x crop factor which is making me overthink my focal lengths lol. I was looking at the standard 50mm f/1.8 since it's basically a 80mm equivalent but then I thought maybe the 85mm f/1.8 would be better for those tight headshots? But then on a crop sensor that 85mm becomes like 136mm which feels kinda long if I don't have a ton of room to back up in the woods. My budget is right around 500 bucks maybe a bit more if its a used Sigma Art lens or something really sharp.

  • Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM
  • Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art
  • Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC

I'm mostly worried about the sharpness because that 32.5MP sensor is apparently really demanding on older lenses and I dont want my shots looking soft. Which prime do you guys think hits the sweet spot for portraits on this body?

I grabbed the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM last month and it works well. Saved a ton of money and honestly the shots are plenty sharp. No complaints from me tho.
