So I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 after shooting with a 5D Mark IV for like a decade and man the autofocus is insane. Im planning this big trip to Iceland in three weeks and I realized my old EF wide angles just arent cutting it for the resolution on this sensor.
I was looking at the RF 15-35mm f2.8 because obviously the speed is nice for some aurora shots but then I saw the RF 14-35mm f4 is actually wider and has better stabilization? My logic was always faster is better but if Im doing long exposures on a tripod for landscapes does the f4 even matter that much? Then I started thinking about the weight because were gonna be hiking a ton. Budget is around 2200 bucks so I could swing the 2.8 if I really need to but part of me thinks the 14mm focal length on the f4 might be more fun for those dramatic cliff shots.
Has anyone noticed a big sharpness difference between those two on the 45mp sensor? I heard the 14-35 relies a lot on digital correction which kinda worries me for a lens that expensive. Im just torn between the two and the clock is ticking for my flight...
Iceland is going to be absolutely epic!! I made the switch from the 5D line too and that R5 sensor is honestly a total game changer for landscapes. Since youre hiking a ton I would 100% grab the Canon RF 14-35mm f4L IS USM. Digital correction sounds scary on paper but in reality you wont even notice it because the R5 handles it like a champ and the images come out tack sharp. That extra 1mm on the wide end makes a massive difference when youre standing in front of those massive Icelandic waterfalls! Quick tip: Grab the f4 to save your back and use the extra cash for a high quality filter like the B+W 77mm Master Circular Polarizer MRC Nano. Those Icelandic greens and blues really need it to pop. Honestly the Canon RF 15-35mm f2.8L IS USM is amazing but carrying that extra weight up a mountain is a drag lol. I used the 14-35 for a week in the Highlands and never once felt like I was missing out on quality. The stabilization is fantastic too. Youll save a few bucks and your back will thank you on those long treks. Go for the 14mm and dont look back! Its such a fun lens to shoot with.
