I just got the Canon R7 and I'm so excited to finally have a real camera! I've been using my phone forever but I wanted something better for my cousins wedding next month. I keep hearing people talk about prime lenses being way better for blurry backgrounds but I honestly have no idea what that even means or which one fits my camera.

I dont want to spend more than like 400 bucks right now since the camera was already expensive. Is there one that's good for people portraits? Sorry if this is a super basic thing to ask I just really dont want to buy the wrong thing and waste money. What prime lens should I actually get?

Re: Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM: Best f/1.8 bokeh... I totally agree that the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is the smartest choice for your budget, but you gotta be careful with the crop factor. Since the R7 isnt a full-frame camera, that 50mm lens is actually gonna look like an 80mm lens once you put it on. It is perfect for those blurry headshots, but you might struggle to fit a whole group of people in the frame at a wedding. I would suggest testing it out in a small room before the big day so you dont get stuck. Another thing to watch out for is that the 50mm doesnt have stabilization built into the glass. Luckily the R7 has IBIS (in-body stabilization), but you still gotta hold it steady. If you feel like 50mm is too zoomed in, maybe look at the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM as a safer wide-angle backup. Its very sharp and fits your budget, though the background wont be quite as blurry as the 50mm.

> Re: Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM: Best f/1.8 bokeh... Totally agree with what the others said about starting there. I have been super satisfied with my R7 and Honestly you should just stick to the Canon brand for your first lens. You cant go wrong with any of their native primes. They are so reliable and I have never had any complaints about the build quality or the autofocus being wonky. Just pick whichever Canon one fits your budget and it will work perfectly. Its way better to have something dependable when you are shooting a wedding for family... nothing worse than gear that doesnt behave. I have been really happy with how my gear holds up during long days and you definitely want that peace of mind.

For the Canon EOS R7, the crop factor (1.6x) transforms standard full-frame primes into ideal everyday lenses.

Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM – On the R7, this becomes a ~56mm "normal" lens, great for street photography, portraits, and low-light events. It features a fast f/1.8 aperture, built-in 5-stop image stabilization, and 0.5x macro capability, all in a compact 305g body.

Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM – This becomes a versatile ~38mm wide-angle lens, perfect for landscapes, vlogging, and environmental portraits. It weighs only 270g and offers a 0.5x macro mode with a 14cm minimum focusing distance.

Both lenses are affordable non-L series primes that pair perfectly with the R7's portability .
