honestly im just so fed up with my old Sigma 150-600 on this R7 because the autofocus is just pulsing constantly and missing fast warblers in the trees. my logic was that the adapter would work fine but its driving me crazy and i need something native before my trip to the everglades next month. so i was thinking about the rf 100-400 since its cheap but maybe too slow? my budget is around $1900 max so the 100-500 is way out of reach right now. ive been looking at the rf 200-800 too but some people say its a struggle in lower light and i dont want to regret another big purchase. what are you guys actually using that doesnt hunt for focus forever...
Agree that native glass is the only real fix for that Sigma pulsing issue. Since you are watching the budget:
- The Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM fits your $1900 limit exactly but it is quite bulky for travel.
- Check the Canon refurbished store first to save a few hundred bucks.
- Avoid the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM if you need reach; you will just end up cropping everything anyway.
You definitely need the Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM!!
- Nano USM focus is insanely fast
- Native RF logic means pulsing wont happen
- 1280mm equivalent reach is just amazing!
Building on the earlier suggestion, going native really is a total gamechanger! My current setup tracks eyes so fast its like cheating... no more pulsing, it just works perfectly!
