sorry if this is a dumb question but im totally new to this. i really want to get into photography but cameras are so expensive! i live in the US and im looking to spend maybe like 500 bucks max on a starter setup for taking pics of my dogs and stuff around the house. i have no idea where to buy used gear without getting scammed.
- needs to be budget friendly (under 500)
- wants something easy for beginners
- definitely needs to be a reputable site
are there any trustworthy places to get refurbished stuff or am i better off just saving more money for a new one?
Stumbled upon this thread today and man, cameras are pricey. Ive had mixed luck with used gear, honestly. Bought a body once that had sensor dust right out of the box, which was a total headache to clean. Unfortunately, even the big sites miss stuff sometimes. If you have 500 bucks, dont bother with buying new. Youll just get entry-level plastic. Here is where I look:
- MPB is usually decent, but watch the condition ratings. They grade them strictly, but Ive had issues with rubber grips peeling on older stuff.
- KEH is basically the industry standard. Their grading is conservative, so a bargain grade usually looks better than you expect. Plus, they offer a solid warranty which is a lifesaver.
- Canon Refurbished store is a hidden gem. Sometimes they have killer deals on older mirrorless bodies, but you have to refresh the page constantly. For shooting dogs running around, you need decent autofocus. I wouldnt grab anything too ancient. Maybe look for a Canon EOS M50 Mark II 24.1MP Mirrorless if you can find a kit in your range. Its small, easy to learn, and the eye-tracking is actually pretty good for pets. If you want something more robust, a used Nikon D5600 24.2MP DSLR is a tank and takes great photos. Just make sure whatever you get comes with a return window. You really dont want to be stuck with a lemon.
Like someone mentioned, you can definitely find some killer deals if you look in the right places! I totally agree that staying with major retailers is the only way to play it safe when you are just starting out. Since you have a 500 dollar limit, here are a few spots and ideas to check:
- MPB and KEH are absolute lifesavers for budget gear. They grade everything really strictly so you know exactly what youre getting before you pay.
- Look into the Sony Alpha a6000 24.3MP Mirrorless Camera. It is legendary for beginners because it is tiny and the autofocus is amazing for catching dogs running around.
- Sometimes buying the body used and grabbing a basic Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens is better than a kit lens. The image quality difference is honestly insane! Just be patient and dont rush the process. You will find something fantastic!
Honestly, buying used is smart. I started years ago on a tight budget and felt exactly the same way. I bought my first body from a big name camera shop's used section and it was spotless. Saved a ton. In my experience, stick to the major retailers with actual return policies instead of random classifieds. Youll save enough to pick up a decent prime lens later, which totally changes the game for dog photos.
