I just picked up a Fujifilm X-T5 and I’m trying to settle on one “do-everything” lens that can live on the camera most of the time. I shoot a mix of travel/street and casual family stuff, mostly handheld, and I’d love something sharp enough to match the 40MP sensor without being huge. Weather sealing would be a plus since I’m outside a lot, and I’m torn between a fast prime vs a versatile zoom (also curious about OIS vs no OIS on the X-T5). Budget is roughly $600–$1,000 used/new. What lens would you recommend as the best all-around choice for the X-T5, and why?
Great info, saved!
Ok so for a true “one lens” setup, I’d *probably* go with a weather-sealed midrange zoom from Fujifilm over a fast prime. Like, it’s just way more flexible for travel + family. OIS matters on the X-T5 since there’s no built-in stabilization, so handheld at slower shutter speeds gets sketchy without it. If you hate zoom size, then a small WR prime is the vibe… but you’ll miss reach indoors/outdoors. idk, depends how often you swap lenses
For your situation, I’d suggest going zoom first, then add a small prime later if you miss the vibe.
- **My “do-everything” pick:** Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR
- Used it as a travel/family lens for a long time and it just… works. It’s WR, pretty compact, sharp enough for the X-T5 in real life (esp stopped down a bit), and the **OIS is huge** since the X-T5 doesn’t have IBIS. For handheld street + kid stuff indoors-ish, OIS buys you a ton of keepers.
- Price: usually like $400–$600 used, so it’s also a solid value.
- **If you want the “best quality all-around zoom” and can stretch budget:** Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR
- Seriously sharp and fast, great for people, but… big/heavy and **no OIS**, so you’re leaning on shutter speed/ISO more.
- **If you go prime:** Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR
- Awesome street/family focal length, WR, crazy sharp. But no OIS + no IBIS means you’ll be at higher ISO indoors.
So yeah, imo the 16-80 is the best “lives on the body” choice for your mix. gl!
