Can someone please just tell me the absolute best budget prime lens for my Fujifilm X-S10 because I am so lost right now? Sorry if this is a totally dumb question but Ive been watching YouTube videos for like three days straight and my brain hurts from all these weird photography terms. I literally just want to take nice pictures of my dog running around the backyard and maybe some street food when I go on a trip to Chicago next month. My max budget is like 300 bucks cause Im kinda broke after buying the camera body. There are just way too many options and I dont know which one actually works without costing a fortune...
Honestly tracking fast dogs and shooting food are two totally different things... do you care more about action shots or low light in restaurants?
- Fujifilm XC 35mm f/2 gives great colors and fast autofocus, but its a bit tight for street food.
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is super sharp, tho a bit over budget new. Let me know what matters most and we will figure it out.
> I literally just want to take nice pictures of my dog running around the backyard and maybe some street food Stop watching the youtube reviews right now, they just complicate things for clicks. For your budget and what you wanna shoot, grab the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 AF. It costs less than two hundred bucks and stays permanently glued to my X-S10 when I travel light. Autofocus is plenty fast for street food shots and it makes the whole setup pocketable. That said, tracking a running dog in the backyard needs a bit more autofocus speed than a pancake lens can always deliver. If the pup is super hyper, look at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. You can usually find them used right around your 300 dollar limit, or sometimes new on sale. That extra light gathering lets you crank the shutter speed up so the dog isnt a blurry mess in your backyard photos. Both choices punch way above their weight class. Dont overthink it. Grab one, slap it on your body, and go take photos. Photography is way more fun once you stop stressing over the gear charts and just start shooting stuff.
Forget the obscure third party brands if you want something reliable that wont let you down mid-trip. I picked up the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF a while back and its been rock solid on my Fuji body. The wider 23mm field of view gives you enough room to capture food sitting right on your table without standing up, and its plenty wide for backyard shots too. Viltrox has really cleaned up their firmware issues lately, so the autofocus actually sticks to moving subjects pretty well now. It stays right around your price point if you look for sales or buy slightly used. You get a metal build that feels safe in your hands instead of cheap plastic, which matters when youre traveling.
^ This. Also, honestly man, trying to shoot a running dog and street food with a single cheap prime is gonna be a headache either way. The Fujifilm XC 35mm f/2 focuses fast enough for pets, but like the other person said, youll be backing up constantly in tight Chicago spots. On the flip side, something wider like the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 is super pocketable for travel, but tracking a sprinting dog with its autofocus motor is gonna test your patience big time.
- Fujifilm XC 35mm f/2: Great colors and speed, but too narrow for close-up food shots indoors.
- TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8: Dirt cheap and tiny, unfortunately misses focus on fast moving stuff a lot. If I had to pick, just grab the Fuji 35mm and deal with stepping back sometimes. Trust me, missing every dog shot because of a sluggish budget lens is way more annoying.
