What is the best lens to get for my new X-E4 for street photography? Sorry if this is a super basic question, Im brand new to this and kinda overwhelmed by all the options. I picked up the body used last week and honestly have no idea what to buy first. Im mostly gonna be wandering around downtown Chicago on weekends trying to take candids of people and buildings. My budget is like 400 bucks max, which I know isnt a ton. Should I be looking at those little pancake lenses I keep seeing mentioned or is there something else I should look at instead? Kinda lost here...
> I picked up the body used last week and honestly have no idea what to buy first. Im mostly gonna be wandering around downtown Chicago on weekends Congrats on the X-E4, but honestly the lens situation for that body is kind of a headache. I started with the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR pancake because everyone says it makes the camera pocketable. Unfortunately, I had major issues with the autofocus speed, and the motor noise was way louder than expected when trying to be stealthy on the street. It just wasnt as good as I wanted for candid shots. Save your cash and grab a used Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R instead. It is a bit bigger, but the rendering is way more special and it handles low light like a dream. Trust me, you wont regret skipping the pancake.
Just catching up on this thread now. Honestly, if you want that classic street photography look without blowing your budget, you should check out the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 XF. I used that one for a full summer in the city and it was honestly a blast. It feels a bit more substantial than those tiny pancakes, but it gives you that wider 35mm equivalent field of view which is perfect for capturing the scale of Chicago architecture while still getting close enough for people shots. Another solid path is manual focus. If you aren't strictly married to autofocus, grab the 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 II. It is super tiny, dirt cheap, and the f/1.2 aperture is amazing for those evening shots when the light in the city gets tricky. Using manual focus actually changed how I shoot because it forces you to anticipate the shot more, which is kinda cool for candids. You just set your focus distance and wait for someone to walk into your zone. It is a bit of a learning curve, but for under 200 bucks, you really cant go wrong. Just dont worry about being perfect right away, honestly, most of my favorite street photos have a little bit of character to them anyway.
Adding my two cents, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR pancake is convenient but honestly felt kinda slow to focus for me. Try these instead:
- TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 AF
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sigma is way sharper tbh.
Re: "Just catching up on this thread now. Honestly,..." - sounds like everyone has their favorites already. Since you're on a budget, dont overlook the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 MF. Its manual focus, but for street stuff in Chicago, that adds to the fun and its dirt cheap. It pairs so nicely with the small body. Honestly, just grab something, get out there, and start shooting. You'll figure out your focal length preference soon enough.
