So I finally caved and bought a Fujifilm X-T30 II because the retro look was just too cool to pass up, but now Im panicking because I have no idea what lens to actually put on it. Ive just been using the kit lens it came with but I feel like I constantly need to zoom in more or zoom out and Im literally just twisting the ring back and forth like an idiot. I have a trip to Japan coming up in like three weeks and I am terrified that I am gonna miss all the good shots because I have the wrong gear. I seriously dont understand any of the technical jargon like focal lengths or f-stops or whatever, I just want one lens that I can leave on the camera the whole time so I dont have to carry a bag full of glass around Tokyo.

Here is what I am trying to figure out:

  • My budget is around 800 bucks, maybe 900 if it is really worth it but I am already broke from the camera.
  • It needs to be good for travel since I am gonna be walking miles every day.
  • I want to be able to take photos of buildings but also zoom in on food or details without changing lenses.
  • Nothing too heavy because my neck hurts really easily.

Is there something that isnt super massive that covers a good range? People keep throwing letters and numbers at me like 18-55 or 16-80 and it honestly just makes my head spin. I just want something that will make my travel photos look decent without me having to learn physics or something. Am I better off just keeping the kit lens or is there a holy grail lens that isnt going to cost me my entire savings? I am so anxious that I am going to buy the wrong thing and ruin my trip. If anyone has suggestions for something easy to use that I can just grab and go, please let me know...

Get the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. In my experience, that constant f/4 aperture and focal range provides superior sharpness for street photography compared to any variable aperture lens.

Honestly, buying a Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is the most logical step for your trip. I have used this lens extensively for travel and find its optical performance to be quite satisfying, especially given the expansive focal range it offers. It covers everything from wide-angle street shots to decent telephoto compression for details.

  • Focal range: 18mm to 135mm gives you incredible flexibility.
  • Weather sealing: Very useful for unpredictable weather in Japan.
  • Stabilization: The image stabilization works well for handheld shots in low light. It stays relatively balanced on the X-T30 II body, and I am happy with how it performs without needing constant adjustments. You will get consistent results without carrying a bag full of extra gear, which makes it an efficient choice for your specific needs.

To add to the point above: be careful about spending your entire budget on a new lens when you might need that money for actual travel expenses in Japan. If you are worried about weight and cost, try looking into the Fujifilm XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ. It is incredibly light and usually much cheaper than the more rugged lenses, which leaves you extra cash for stuff like food or transit passes.

  • It is very compact for long walking days.
  • The zoom is electronic which helps save space.
  • Pricing is very budget-friendly on the used market. You might want to consider checking sites like MPB or KEH for used copies to save even more. Just make sure you test it thoroughly before you leave. Honestly, dont stress too much about the gear, just pack an extra SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card so you dont run out of space.

Been thinking about your setup since I read this earlier. Honestly, I had some real reliability issues with certain zooms during long trips, so I am a bit cautious about just jumping into a new purchase. Before you drop your cash, I have a couple of questions:

  • Do you usually shoot more in broad daylight or at night?
  • How much are you planning on printing these photos versus just posting on social media?
