Is the Fujifilm 23mm f/2 good for street?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been shooting more street lately and I’m thinking about picking up the Fujifilm 23mm f/2, but I’m not sure if it’s actually a great “street lens” in real-world use or just a popular recommendation.

Right now I’m usually walking around with a small Fuji body (X-series) and I’m trying to keep my setup as low-key and lightweight as possible. I like the idea of 23mm on APS-C because it feels close to a natural “documentary” view, but I’m also worried it might be a little wide for how I tend to shoot (I often find myself framing people from a few steps away rather than super close).

A few things I’m specifically wondering about:
- How does the 23mm f/2 handle focus for street—especially quick shots where you raise the camera and shoot? Is it snappy and reliable, or does it hunt in mixed light?
- Is f/2 enough for evening street stuff (think streetlights, storefront lighting, dusk), or do you find yourself constantly pushing ISO? I’m not chasing super blurry backgrounds, but I don’t want a ton of motion blur either.
- How “stealthy” is it in practice? I’ve read it’s compact and weather-sealed, which sounds perfect for walking around in light rain or just not babying the gear.

I’m trying to keep my budget reasonable (around $300–$450 used), so I’m looking at the f/2 version rather than the f/1.4.

For those who’ve used the Fujifilm 23mm f/2 specifically for street photography, does it actually feel like a strong everyday street lens, and what are the main downsides you’ve run into?

For your situation, yeah the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR is actually a solid everyday street lens IMO — it’s quick to focus for raise-and-shoot stuff on most X bodies, but in messy mixed light it can hunt a bit, so I’d set a minimum shutter (like 1/250) + Auto ISO and just let it ride.

And f/2 is usually enough for dusk/storefront light if you’re ok at ISO 3200–6400 and not trying to freeze sprinters… if you want “evening street” with less ISO, the real move is used Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R (often in your budget) and just step back a hair. WR/size wise tho, the 23/2 is lowkey hard to beat. cheers

+1 to that. 23 on APS-C is awesome but yeah you gotta work closer than you think. For market/budget reality: used Fuji glass holds value, but if you want cheaper + faster, look at Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF or Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary (Fujifilm X). They’re less stealthy/bigger tho. For low light, set Auto ISO + min shutter (1/250-ish) and youre fine most nights, honestly

> I’m thinking about picking up the Fujifilm 23mm f/2… focus… evening… stealthy?

In my experience, yeah it’s a legit street lens. AF is actually pretty snappy for those raise-and-shoot moments; it might hunt a bit in gnarly mixed light but not enough to annoy me. f/2 is fine for dusk/streetlights if you’re ok bumping ISO a little (I am). And it’s super lowkey—small, quiet, weather sealing means you stop babying it. Main downside: 23mm can feel wide if you like more distance, so you gotta commit to getting closer sometimes...

- In my experience, yeah it’s a strong everyday street lens *if* you’re cool with the wider view (you’ll be closer than you think). I got WAY more keepers once I practiced shooting from the hip/quick raise.
- Focus: usually snappy, but it’ll hunt in mixed light if there’s low contrast—so I started using a minimum shutter + pre-focus/zone to stay “safe-first” and not miss the moment.
- f/2 at night: doable, but you’ll push ISO and still need 1/250-ish for people.
- Stealth: compact helps, and weather sealing = less stress in drizzle. Downside: wide means more background chaos, gotta watch edges.

Regarding what #7 said about "> it’s a strong everyday street lens if you’re cool with the wider view"

  • I think that is really the crux of the issue. In my experience shooting Fuji for years, if you are already worried about being too far away, 23mm will definitely feel a bit loose. You might find yourself cropping more than you'd like. The Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is a performance beast tho. The AF is basically instant because the focus group is so light. If you want that same speed and weather sealing but want to stay a bit further back, the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR is probably a better fit for your style. It fits the same budget and size profile but gives you that extra reach. If stealth is the top priority, you should also look at:
  • Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR for a tiny pancake profile that fits in a pocket
  • Fujifilm XF 18mm f/2 R if you ever decide to lean into a really wide perspective The f/2 aperture is usually plenty for evening stuff unless you are shooting in a literal cave. Just let the ISO climb to 6400 and dont sweat the noise too much... modern X-series sensors handle it well and a little grain actually looks good for street work anyway.

Dude I am literally in the exact same boat right now!! I have been obsessing over whether to grab that lens because I am so worried it is gonna be too wide for my style too. I usually like to keep a bit of distance and I am terrified I will end up just cropping every single shot, which basically defeats the purpose of buying a prime imo. Plus I have been super stressed about whether the older AF motors in my body will even keep up with it properly or if there are weird compatibility quirks... it is a struggle for sure. Honestly though, you should totally just check YouTube or Reddit for this. I saw this amazing POV street video yesterday that was literally exactly what we are both looking for! Just search for like street photography 23mm vs 35mm on there and it is like the first or second result. It shows exactly how close you have to get to the subjects and made things so much clearer for me. Definitely go watch some of those POV videos before you drop the cash!!

To add to the point above: I think the worry about it being too wide is totally legit if youre used to staying back a bit. I’ve been super satisfied with mine for the last few months tho. It just works well when you want to be low-key.

  • The AF is fast enough that I rarely think about it. It just snaps to where it needs to be.
  • Evening shots are totally fine. I dont mind a little grain, so pushing the ISO doesnt bother me much.
  • Not sure but IIRC, some people find the slightly narrower 35mm focal length easier for street if they dont like getting in people's faces.
  • Its definitely tiny. Most people wont even notice you have a real camera. Honestly, for that price range, it’s a solid choice even if you end up cropping a little here and there. It's been a great experience for me.
