So I finally bit the bullet and bought an X-T5 because it looked so cool and everyone said the retro dials were fun, but now that I actually have it I feel kinda silly because I have no idea what lens to put on it? I feel like such a newbie asking this but the kit lens is fine I guess, but I really want something that makes the photos look super professional like the ones I see on Instagram.
I have a trip coming up to Japan in about two months and I really want to be able to take it everywhere without my bag feeling like a ton of bricks. My budget is probably around 800-1000 bucks tops since I already spent a lot on the body. Honestly I just want one lens that does it all so I dont have to mess around with switching them out while walking around Tokyo.
- Needs to be decent for street photography
- Something good for blurry backgrounds if possible
- Definitely needs to be compact
- Not super expensive please
Is the 18-55mm worth keeping or should I look at a prime lens instead? Ive heard people talk about the 35mm but I have no idea if that covers enough ground for travel. Im really excited to start shooting but I dont want to waste money on the wrong glass...
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly though, while the 23mm is sweet, I think you might find it a bit restrictive for an all-day Japan trip. If you want that pro look without carrying a bag full of heavy glass, you should look at the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. I know it sounds counterintuitive to get another zoom, but it covers everything from wide street shots in Tokyo to tighter compositions at shrines. You wont need to swap lenses once. If you really want a prime, the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R is the classic choice for that blurry background effect, but it feels way slower than the newer stuff. Stick with a versatile zoom for travel and you will be much happier.

I took a massive setup to Kyoto once and ended up leaving it at the hotel half the time because it was exhausting. Honestly, keep the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS for now. It is genuinely sharp and way more versatile than a prime when you are navigating crowded train stations. If you really want that professional look, grab the Fujifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR. It is a bit pricey but the background blur is legit. Just make sure you practice before the flight so you dont miss shots messing with settings. Switching lenses in Tokyo humidity is a nightmare anyway, so maybe stick to one.
