What is the best lens to just keep on my Fujifilm XT5 all the time while I'm traveling because I'm so confused? I finally saved up and bought this camera for my trip to Rome in three weeks but honestly I have no idea what I'm doing and all the numbers like 18-55 or 16-80 are just making my head spin. I dont want to keep switching lenses and missing things because I'm too slow or I'll probably drop something. My budget is around $800 to $1000 left and I just want one thing that can take pictures of buildings but also people. Is there one that does everything or am I asking for too much... sorry if this is a stupid question I'm just really overwhelmed with all the options online.

Yo, first off, congrats on the X-T5! That 40-megapixel sensor is absolutely insane for detail. For Rome, you 100% need the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR because it is basically the Swiss Army knife of lenses! Heres the nerdy breakdown of why it rocks:

  • The 16mm wide end is wide enough to cram the entire Colosseum into one shot without backing up into traffic.
  • The 80mm long end is fantastic for zooming in on architectural details or taking beautiful portraits with nice background blur.
  • It has dedicated Optical Image Stabilization that works with your cameras IBIS for like 7 stops of total shake reduction. You can take sharp photos in dim cathedrals without a tripod!
  • Constant f/4 aperture means your settings wont jump around while you zoom in and out. Seriously, just pop this on and dont take it off the whole trip. It handles everything and stays well within your budget!

Honestly, I had a pretty frustrating experience trying to find a one and done lens for my X-T5 because that 40MP sensor is just so picky. I initially tried the Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR but it was super disappointing... the images just werent as sharp as I expected for such an expensive setup. It felt like I was wasting the cameras potential tbh. Unfortunately, a lot of the older zooms just dont resolve enough detail for this specific body. If you want one lens that actually handles the buildings and the people without driving you crazy, you should look at the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. Its a bit chunky, but having that constant f/2.8 aperture is huge when you are inside those dark Italian cathedrals or shooting at dinner. I had issues with other lenses being too slow in low light, but this one really works well. Alternatively, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is tiny and sharp. My only gripe is that it starts at 18mm, which feels kinda cramped when you are standing in a narrow Roman alleyway. It was not as good as expected for architecture because of that narrowness, but the size is perfect for travel. Since your X-T5 has built in stabilization, you wont have to worry about shaky shots. Just keep in mind that with the 40MP sensor, you really start to see the flaws in older glass... it can be a real headache. Dont let the numbers scare you too much, you mostly just want something that lets in enough light so your photos arent grainy.
