Adding my two cents, if you want reliability for Japan, skip the kit lens and look at the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS replacement or the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. The 16-80mm is fully weather-sealed, which helps in Seattle rain. Primes like the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR are sharper, but for travel, you really cant beat the zoom range when you need that versatility in a pinch.
