So I'm flying out to Tokyo in literally two weeks for a ten-day trip and I am completely stressing out about my camera setup. I just upgraded to the Fujifilm X-T5 and I need a solid, fast street photography lens that can handle the new 40 megapixel sensor. My budget is capped at like $600 max, and I'm totally fine buying used.

I've done a ton of reading online but I'm getting conflicting info. Everyone recommends the XF 27mm f2.8 pancake because it makes the setup so tiny, but then I read that the autofocus is kinda loud and slow, and I'm worried it won't resolve enough detail on the new sensor. Then there is the XF 23mm f2 which has fast autofocus and weather sealing, but some reviews say it gets super soft when you shoot close up at f2. Plus, is 23mm too wide for Tokyo's busy streets?

I need to order something by Tuesday to get it in time for my flight. What is actually the best street lens for the X-T5 that can keep up with the autofocus and sensor?

Just found this thread... be careful about the smaller f2 lenses on that 40MP sensor. They sometimes struggle with the fine details. You might want to consider the Viltrox AF 27mm f1.2 Pro for Fujifilm X instead. It is way bigger than the pancake but the autofocus is silent and its basically the sharpest lens for Fuji right now. Just watch out for the weight, it is definitely a chunky one.

>autofocus is kinda loud and slow Unfortunately, f2 glass was not as good as expected on the T5. I had issues with reliability. Buy the Sigma 23mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. Tip: watch the rain.

Honestly, you can stop stressing. I went through this exact same panic before my last trip to Japan. Since you are shooting on the X-T5, you want something that can keep up with that 40MP sensor, but dont overthink the resolving power stuff too much. Most modern glass looks great. For Tokyo, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f2 R WR is my go-to recommendation. The internet totally exaggerates the softness at f2. Yes, if you are shooting literally at minimum focus distance wide open, it gets a bit soft. But for street photography? You are rarely focusing that close. It is blazing fast, weather-sealed, and fits perfectly on the X-T5. You can easily find one used for around 300 to 350 bucks, leaving you with extra cash for ramen. If you want something slightly tighter to cut through the visual noise of Shibuya and Shinjuku, check out the Fujifilm XF 35mm f2 R WR. It is tack sharp even wide open and incredibly compact. If you want to blow the whole 600 dollar budget on something higher-end, try to find a used Fujifilm XF 23mm f1.4 R LM WR. It is a bit bigger, but it fully resolves the 40MP sensor and the linear motor autofocus is dead silent. Honestly though, the f2 primes are more than enough for a trip like this.

Go for the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f2 R WR without hesitation! I have shot with this setup for years and it is absolutely fantastic for Tokyos compressed street scenes. Here is why this lens is the perfect match:

  • Resolution: It easily resolves the 40MP sensor when stopped down slightly, giving you razor-sharp details.
  • Autofocus: The inner focusing system is dead silent and incredibly fast, which is crucial for quick snapshots.
  • Weather sealing: Tokyo weather can be unpredictable, and having WR on your lens to match the X-T5 is a massive lifesaver. If you want something slightly wider with a faster aperture, definitely check out the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. It has incredible optical performance and fits your budget perfectly!
