Which lens is actually the sharpest for portraits on the X-T5 40mp sensor? I've been shooting Fuji for about eight years now, started with the X-T1 and I've owned almost every prime at some point, but this new high-res sensor is driving me a little crazy. I’m currently using the original 56mm f1.2 R and while I loved it on my X-T3, it just feels... soft? Like it cant quite keep up with the resolution of the X-T5. I’m seeing some purple fringing that I never noticed before and the eyes just dont have that bite I’m looking for when I crop in.
I have a big wedding shoot coming up in Seattle next month and the couple really wants these high-end, crisp editorial style portraits. I’m debating between the new 56mm f1.2 WR version or maybe even the 50mm f1.0, though I’ve heard the 1.0 is more about the bokeh than the raw sharpness. Some people say the 90mm f2 is the sharpest lens Fuji ever made but I’m worried that might be too long for some of the tighter spots at the venue. Money isnt a huge deal, I can go up to $1500 or so if it actually makes a difference.
I also looked at the Viltrox 75mm 1.2 since everyone is raving about it lately but I’ve always been a first-party glass snob lol. Is it actually sharper than the Fuji 56 WR? I just need something that wont fall apart when I'm looking at files on a 5k monitor. I tried stopping down my old 56mm to f2.8 or f4 but it still feels a bit dated compared to what this body can do. If you had to pick one lens to really show off what the 40mp sensor can do for skin detail and eyes, which one are you grabbing?
Regarding what #2 said about "Re: "Man, you are so right about that..."
- I think the group is spot on. The old 56mm and the 50mm f1.0 just arent going to give you that clinical, high-res look you need for an editorial wedding shoot. The X-T5 sensor is really demanding. If you are worried about sharpness on a 5k monitor, I would suggest considering these two options:
- Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f1.2 R WR: This is the safest bet for professional work. It handles the 40mp sensor beautifully and the weather sealing is a must for Seattle. It has much better purple fringing control than your old lens.
- Viltrox AF 75mm f1.2 Pro XF: Tbh, this is the sharpest lens I have ever used on Fuji. The detail in the eyes is incredible. However, make sure to consider the 75mm focal length because it can feel very long in tight spaces. I would be careful with the Viltrox if you really value the Fuji "look," as the colors can be a tiny bit different. If money isnt the main issue, the new 56mm WR is the most balanced choice for that high-end crispness.
To add to the point above: forget brand snobbery!
- Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 Pro XF This beast is sharp and super cheap tho. Just mind the AF reliability compared to Fuji glass!
Man, you are so right about that old 56mm glass! I had the exact same realization when I moved to the X-T5 last year. It was my absolute favorite lens for years, but that 40mp sensor is just a different beast entirely. I remember shooting a lifestyle session at a beach in Oregon and being so disappointed when I zoomed in on the eyes. Everything looked kind of mushy compared to what I expected. The purple fringing is real too! Its like the new sensor exposes every little flaw we used to ignore. I totally agree that the older glass just doesnt have the bite anymore. Making the switch to the newer optical designs was a total game changer for me, and the sharpness is actually insane now! It catches every single eyelash with such crazy precision its almost scary. You definitely need that extra resolving power for those 5k monitors.
Re: "Man, you are so right about that old..."
- You really gotta be careful with that old glass on the 40mp sensor. It shows every single flaw. I would suggest staying away from the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR if raw sharpness is your main goal tho. It is a specialized lens for a specific look, but it wont give you that clinical, high-end editorial bite across the frame like the newer stuff. It is more about the mood than the pixels. If you want the absolute sharpest, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR is the one to grab. It is a completely different optical design than your old R version. It handles the resolution way better and basically eliminates that purple fringing you're seeing. Just keep in mind it is a bit slower to focus than some of the LM lenses, which might be an issue during the ceremony. For the wedding in Seattle, you might want to consider the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR as well, but only if you have the room to move. It is legendary for sharpness but it can be really tight indoors. Honestly, if you're looking for that wow factor for skin detail, the Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 XF Pro is actually the real deal. I know you said you're a snob for Fuji glass, but that lens is scary sharp on the X-T5. Just make sure to test the autofocus under pressure before the big day because third-party can be a bit different during fast-paced events.
> @Reply #4 - good point! Viltrox has been making waves but honestly, i’ve been pretty disappointed with the whole transition to the 40mp sensor lately. just saw this thread and it reminds me of a gig i did last year where i felt let down by my setup. i had issues with the clarity on the 40mp body and it just wasnt as good as expected... kinda frustrating when you expect that bite and dont get it. basically, the consensus here seems to be that the old glass is failing while the newer fuji or viltrox stuff is the only way to go, but everyone has a different opinion on which one is actually better. honestly tho, instead of taking our word for it, just check out reddit or youtube. if you search for x-t5 40mp lens compatibility list there is a massive spreadsheet on the fujifilm sub that compares fuji vs sigma vs tamron. i saw a great video once where a guy did 400% crops on a 5k screen for all these lenses, so just look that up. fuji actually has a specific list on their official site of which glass can handle the new sensor anyway... just search for that and it will tell you everything you need to know.
