I recently purchased the new Fujifilm X-T5 mirrorless camera and love how compact and lightweight it is for travel. I'm looking for recommendations on a good general purpose travel zoom lens to pair with this camera body.

Just saw this and had to jump in with some budget picks. Honestly, if you want to save some cash without losing image quality, third-party glass is where the real value is right now. I've been super satisfied with my current setup and it didnt break the bank at all.

  • Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is basically the king of budget travel. Its tiny, fits the X-T5 perfectly, and having that constant f/2.8 for low light is huge.
  • Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for when you just want one lens to do everything. It covers a crazy range so you dont have to swap glass in the middle of a tour. Like someone mentioned, keeping things light is key for the X-T5. I'm really happy with the Sigma tho... it's so light you barely notice it on the neck strap. No complaints about the build quality either, it feels solid for the price.

Unfortunately, many of the common travel zooms struggle to resolve the full 40-megapixel resolution of the X-T5 sensor. I have personally had issues with significant corner softness and chromatic aberration on the wider ends of those all-in-one lenses, which is quite disappointing for a body this capable. You really dont want to bottleneck that sensor with mediocre glass. If you prioritize optical reliability and consistent MTF performance, the Fujinon XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is technically the superior choice. While it lacks internal stabilization, which is a bit of a letdown, the X-T5 IBIS compensates well enough for most shots. The build quality is far more robust than the cheaper variable aperture zooms. Its weather resistance is top-tier because it doesn't use a fragile telescoping design that sucks in moisture or dust over time. The triple linear motor system ensures the autofocus doesnt hunt even in challenging light, making it much more dependable for serious travel work. Honestly, the extra weight is worth it for the reliability alone.

> Honestly, finding a lens that actually holds up to that 40MP sensor is harder than it looks. @Reply #5 - good point! Ngl, that 40MP sensor is a total beast and you really gotta be careful about what you put in front of it. I totally agree that some of those zooms might not cut it if you are looking for total reliability and sharp corners. If you are worried about the technical side and want to make sure you arent wasting money, honestly just head over to YouTube or check the Fuji subreddits. I saw a super detailed breakdown video the other day... just search for Fuji XT5 lens resolution test and it should be like the first result. It shows the side-by-side crops so you can see how they handle the sensor for yourself. I usually try to find sites where you can download the raw sample files too, just to be safe. Better to spend an hour watching tests than dealing with a return later... just my two cents!

For Fujifilm X-T5, a versatile travel lens would be the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS. This lens offers a convenient zoom range (27-84mm equivalent), a fast aperture for low light situations, and excellent image quality, making it great for a variety of scenes, from landscapes to portraits.

Another excellent option is the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR if you prefer a wider angle for landscapes and architectural photography. It provides a focal length equivalent of 15-36mm on full-frame cameras.

For those looking for a prime lens with great low-light performance and sharpness, Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR is a compact and weather-sealed option that is very popular among photographers.

For the Fujifilm X-T5, there are several great travel zoom lens options that provide a versatile focal range while maintaining good image quality and a relatively compact size. Here are a few recommendations:

  1. Fujinon XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

    • Focal range equivalent to 27-206mm in full-frame terms
    • Optical image stabilization (OIS) for sharper handheld shots
    • Weather-resistant (WR) construction
    • Ideal for landscapes, portraits, and general travel photography
  2. Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR

    • Focal range equivalent to 24-120mm in full-frame terms
    • Constant f/4 aperture throughout the zoom range
    • Optical image stabilization (OIS) and weather-resistant (WR) design
    • Suitable for a wide range of travel situations
  3. Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN C

    • Focal range equivalent to 27-75mm in full-frame terms
    • Relatively fast aperture range of f/2.8
    • Optical image stabilization for low-light performance
    • Compact and lightweight design
  4. Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD

    • Focal range equivalent to 27-450mm in full-frame terms
    • Extensive zoom range covering wide-angle to super-telephoto
    • Vibration Compensation (VC) for image stabilization
    • A versatile all-in-one lens for various travel scenarios

Consider your specific needs, preferences, and budget when choosing a lens. If you prioritize a wider focal range, the Tamron 18-300mm might be a good choice. For a balance between zoom range and aperture, the Fujinon 18-135mm or 16-80mm are excellent options. If you prefer a more compact lens with a faster aperture, the Fujinon 18-55mm is worth considering.

Re: "For the Fujifilm X-T5, there are several great..."

  • Honestly, finding a lens that actually holds up to that 40MP sensor is harder than it looks. Ive had issues with some of the lighter zooms lately where the build quality just felt kinda flimsy. Unfortunately, the edge-to-edge sharpness on some third-party glass isnt as good as expected when compared to staying within the Fuji ecosystem. Before you commit, what are you actually looking for in terms of build? Are you prioritizing a rugged, weather-sealed body for peace of mind, or is keeping the weight down your main goal? Also, what kind of budget are you working with... because the price difference between those brands is huge and I dont want to suggest something way out of your range for the Fujifilm X-T5.

Catching up on this thread now and love the energy here! If you want a really unique travel zoom that handles the 40MP sensor surprisingly well without weighing you down, you should definitely check out the Fujinon XF 18-120mm f/4 PZ LM PZ WR. It is super versatile and honestly fantastic for both stills and video since it is a power zoom.

  • Internal zooming keeps everything balanced on the X-T5.
  • Weather sealing is perfect for those unexpected rainy trips.
  • Focus is snappy as heck for moving subjects. I actually ended up using it for a short vlog last month when I was supposed to be doing landscape shots... got totally distracted by this local food festival nearby. I swear I ate my weight in street tacos and totally forgot to swap lenses for the sunset. My stomach definitely won that battle lol. I still have some of those taco photos on my phone and they look better than the scenery anyway. But yeah, let me know if you need more info on how it feels in the hand!

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
