My first big paid gig is next Saturday and Im kinda freaking out because my kit lens wont cut it for the headshots. Im stuck between the 56mm f1.2 and the 90mm f2... I only have 800 bucks left so I cant mess this up. Which one is better for that pro look?

Honestly, I have been pretty disappointed with the Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R for high-stakes work. Its not as reliable as you would expect for the price. I have had issues with focus hunting in lower light, which is unfortunately quite unprofessional when a client is watching you struggle. Here is a comparison based on my professional experience with both:

  • Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R: While the aperture is fast, the autofocus motor is unfortunately quite dated. It tends to hunt in studio settings which is kinda frustrating during a session.
  • Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR: This lens provides much better compression for headshots. The quad linear motor is reliable and the sharpness is superior to the 56mm tho. I would definitely choose the 90mm. Its a much safer bet for your first gig. The 56mm is just too inconsistent and I wouldnt trust it under pressure...
