Im seriously about to throw my current kit into the river. I keep trying to capture street shots around downtown Chicago, but my current zoom lens is just so bulky and slow that by the time I get it focused, the moment is already gone. Im totally over it honestly. I have about 600 bucks saved up and really need something small and snappy for candid stuff before my trip next month. I keep hearing about the Fuji primes but there are too many options and I just cant decide. Should I go with the 27mm pancake or is the 23mm f/2 better for actual street work?

Forget the zoom, honestly. When I was walking around the loop last year, the weight of a heavy glass just killed my motivation. You really want something that makes you forget you are carrying a camera. If you want speed and that classic street look, look into these:

  • Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR
  • It is super sharp and focuses instantly.
  • TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 X-Mount
  • A super cheap, fun alternative if you want to save cash for film or coffee. For street stuff, just leave it on aperture priority and stop worrying about the settings. The 35mm is my go-to when I want that slightly tighter compression. Seriously, getting something tiny will change how you shoot. You will be way less intimidated by the crowds downtown, and it is honestly liberating to just walk around with a light setup.

To add to the point above: you might be sleeping on the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm f/2 R. It is super tiny and arguably faster to snap than the others because the focus throw is short. Over the years, I have found that wider is usually better for street stuff anyways.

  • It is way sharper than people give it credit for.
  • The build quality is solid enough for daily abuse.
  • Fits in a jacket pocket easily.

Late to the party but here is the deal. The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR is basically invisible on the camera, making it perfect for blending in. However, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR is better for low light and has a manual aperture ring.

  • Check out the Optical Limits lens reviews for sharpness data.
  • Use the Camera Size website to compare body-lens dimensions. Either choice beats that zoom lens, trust me.

Honestly, I felt the exact same way before I made the jump to primes. My current setup was just dragging me down and I was missing every single shot. I spent forever obsessing over focal lengths, but honestly, once I got a small, fast prime on my body, everything just clicked. The focus speed is a world of difference from those heavy zooms. I had a blast testing a few out, and I ended up grabbing one that lives on my camera now. It just feels right for quick, candid stuff downtown. Youre gonna be so happy once you ditch the extra weight, trust me. Just grab something compact and fast, and your street photography is gonna improve instantly. Its such a huge relief when your gear finally stops getting in the way of the moment.
