Is the 23mm f/2 still the gold standard for Fuji street photography, or is the 18mm f/2 just better for that close-in look? I have been shooting with my X-T3 for about four years now, mostly sticking to the kit zoom, but Ive reached a point where the lens size is honestly killing my motivation to actually carry the camera around town. Im going on a trip to Tokyo in about three weeks and the thought of hauling that heavy zoom through crowded train stations is giving me so much anxiety, I just want something compact and discreet.
I really enjoy getting right into the action, so I need something that focuses fast and doesnt look like a massive cannon pointed at people. My budget is around 500 bucks, maybe a little more if I go used. Im leaning towards the 23mm because of the focal length, but then I keep reading about how the 18mm is way more 'street' in terms of framing. I dont know, maybe I should just pick one and stop overthinking it before I leave. Does anyone have experience with both in real-world, busy street environments?
Honestly, if you want something super reliable and cheap for that Tokyo trip, look at the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 or just find a used Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR. Both are sharp and wont break the bank.
- The 35mm is weather sealed and really solid
- The TTArtisan is dirt cheap and tiny You really cant go wrong with either for quick shots.
Regarding what #1 said about the 23mm, they are spot on about the size, but honestly you should check out the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR. It is a total pancake lens and makes your X-T3 feel like a point-and-shoot, which is amazing for those tight Tokyo alleys! The autofocus is snappy enough for street stuff and it is weather-sealed too. If you really want that wider field of view though, the Samyang AF 12mm f/2 X is a fantastic alternative if you dont mind going third-party for that ultra-wide look. It is super sharp and lets you capture way more of the scene without needing to step back. Just a quick tip: keep your shutter speed up to at least 1/250 for sharp shots in those neon-lit crowds!
Can confirm
TL;DR: Grab the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR if you want that classic 35mm feel, but honestly for Tokyo, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm f/2 R is the real king of compact street shooters. I have used both extensively on my X-T3 and honestly, the difference in size is massive. The 23mm f/2 is super sharp and the weather resistance is nice, but it sticks out a bit more than the pancake lens. If you are hitting up Tokyo train stations, you want to be invisible. The 18mm f/2 is tiny. It basically turns your camera into a pocketable point-and-shoot setup, which completely changed my motivation levels. Performance-wise, the 23mm f/2 is definitely faster to lock focus, which is a pro. The 18mm can be a little noisier and slightly slower, but for street work, it's totally acceptable. The 18mm field of view is wider, so you really have to get in close, which fits your style perfectly. You wont get that cannon look at all with the pancake lens. If I had to pick just one for a trip to Japan, I would take the 18mm every single time. It is lighter, smaller, and just makes the X-T3 fun again. You will thank yourself when you are trekking around Shinjuku all day.
Works great for me
Honestly, after spending a lot of time wandering around Shibuya with my setup, I have learned that the focal length decision really comes down to your personal shooting style more than anything else. You gotta decide if you want to be a fly on the wall or if you prefer being right up in the action where you can actually interact with the scene.
- Do you usually find yourself cropping in a lot with your current zoom, or are you constantly trying to back up to get everything in the frame?
- Are you okay with manual focusing, or is instant autofocus performance the absolute make-or-break feature for you while navigating those Tokyo crowds? I have tried both approaches over the years and they completely change how you move through a city. Think about how you have been using your zoom lately and try to pin down that one specific thing that annoys you about it. Is it just the bulk, or is it also how it draws attention when you are trying to be discreet?
