I finally snagged a used silver X-E4 for my trip to Tokyo in like three weeks but now I'm lowkey panicking about which lens to actually commit to. I spent hours reading and everyone keeps pointing to the 27mm f2.8 pancake because it's so tiny and keeps it pocketable but then I saw some videos where the autofocus sounds super clunky and slow which is honestly scary for fast street shots.
I also looked at the 23mm f2 fujicron but I'm worried itll make the whole setup feel front-heavy or just lose that stealthy vibe I bought the E4 for. My budget is around $450 max and I just want something discrete... which one would you guys choose for street?

Man, you are gonna have an absolute blast in Tokyo with that setup! That silver X-E4 is basically the holy grail for street photography right now. Honestly, if you want that stealthy, pocketable vibe you bought the camera for, you 100% have to go with the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR. I know some videos make the autofocus sound like a tractor, but in a busy city? You literally wont even notice it, and it is definitely fast enough for capturing people walking by. I took that exact combo to Shinjuku last year and it was incredible. I could keep the camera tucked in my jacket pocket and just pull it out when I saw a cool moment. People dont even look twice at you because it looks like a tiny vintage point-and-shoot. The 23mm is a fantastic lens, dont get me wrong, but it makes the camera feel way more pro and obvious, which kinda kills the stealth. Plus the 23mm is a bit front-heavy on the E4 since there is no real grip to hold onto. The 27mm gives you that 40mm equivalent focal length which is such a sweet spot. Its tight enough for portraits but wide enough for street context. Seriously, for your $450 budget, you can find a used WR version easily. Having that physical aperture ring makes the shooting experience so much more tactile than the older version. Go for it and spend the leftover money on some amazing ramen!
