Just bought an S5 II for my trip to Japan next month and I am so stoked! Honestly though Im totally lost with these L-mount lenses. I really just want the sharpest glass possible for street shots without spending a fortune. Any ideas on which ones are actually worth the money?

Agree on the 35mm, but for more reach, look at the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. It is stupidly sharp, though unfortunately the corner sharpness falls off slightly wide open. If you want something compact, I had issues with focus speed on the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8, it is not as good as expected for street action. Grab the Sigma if you want pro-level detail.

Building on the earlier suggestion, you really need to consider the Sigma 24mm F3.5 DG DN Contemporary for street work. Over the years, I have tested countless primes, and this little lens is shockingly sharp across the frame even wide open. It is basically a pancake lens, which is perfect for keeping your S5 II discreet while walking around Tokyo.

  • The optical construction includes 10 elements in 8 groups, keeping distortion near zero.
  • Build quality feels premium despite the price.
  • Focus is snappy enough for street candid shots. If you want more flexibility, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is honestly your best bet. It saves you from constant lens changes and delivers professional contrast. Honestly, I dont leave home without it. It is lighter than the typical 24-70mm f/2.8 beasts and holds up well against much pricier glass.

TL;DR: Grab the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 for street work. Honestly, dont blow your budget on heavy glass. This lens is sharp, tiny, and weather-sealed, so it wont fail in Japan. Just be careful with wide-open shots, focus can be finicky if youre rushing. Make sure to keep your firmware updated on the S5 II before you board the plane. Itll feel like a pro kit without the massive price tag.
