So I finally pulled the trigger on a Lumix S5II after saving up for like six months and I am beyond stoked to start shooting with it!! Im planning this big trip to Kyoto in three weeks and I really want to just bring one lens so I dont have to keep swapping things out while I'm hiking around the temples and stuff.

I've been doing a ton of reading and I keep seeing people recommend the Panasonic 24-105mm f4 because of the OIS and that extra bit of reach on the long end but then I also saw the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 Contemporary which is way lighter and has that faster aperture for night shots. My budget is capped at about $1100 since I spent most of it on the body so I'm really torn between the two. The 24mm wide end on the Lumix seems useful for the narrow streets but then I worry about f4 being too slow when the sun goes down or if I'm inside a shrine. On the other hand is 28mm wide enough? I'm honestly just looking for that one goldilocks lens that stays on the camera 90% of the time for travel and general street stuff. What do you guys think is the absolute best all-arounder for this system?

Unfortunately I dont think there is an absolute best one. I had a really disappointing time with a single zoom on my last trip because it was way too heavy and felt unreliable... it just wasnt as good as expected. I recommend prioritizing comfort for those long walks.

  • Do you need a wider angle for those narrow streets?
  • Is weight your biggest concern for the hiking?
