Honestly im just so fed up with the kit lens that came with my D3500. It feels like every time I try to take photos of my dog at the park or just some street shots downtown, the image just turns out soft and muddy. I thought maybe I just sucked at photography but I spent all weekend watching tutorials and tweaking settings and nope, the glass is just not doing it for me anymore. Im starting to get really annoyed because I have a big trip coming up in about three weeks to visit my sister in Chicago and I dont want to bring back a memory card full of blurry junk.

I really need something sharper but I dont exactly have a grand to blow on pro glass right now. My budget is pretty tight, maybe around 200 to 300 bucks max, which I know is not much in the camera world but its all I can justify after booking the flights. Ive been looking at the 35mm prime because everyone says its a must-have but is that really gonna make a big enough difference for my travel shots? Or should I be looking for something else entirely? I just want something that makes my photos actually look crisp without having to take out a loan. If anyone has a recommendation for a decent DX lens that wont break the bank but actually lets me see some detail I would love to hear it cause im kinda losing my mind here...

Like someone mentioned, the 35mm is sharp, but are you planning to do mostly landscapes or portraits in Chicago? If you need more versatility, check these out:

Just catching up on this thread. Listen, ditching that kit lens is the best move you will ever make. Are you wanting to capture wide cityscapes or tight street portraits in Chicago? That changes everything. For now, try Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G for low light, and remember to bump your shutter speed up to 1/250th or faster when shooting your dog. It makes a massive difference for sharpness!

> I've been looking at the 35mm prime... is that really gonna make a big enough difference Honestly, yeah. Grab the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G. Total game changer, super sharp, and cheap.
