Ugh, I am so frustrated right now. I bought a used Nikon D3500 a few months ago and I am seriously struggling to get those blurry backgrounds everyone talks about. I have like 200 bucks max to spend and my niece has her birthday party in two weeks so I really need something better than the kit lens I have right now. Everything I search online talks about f-stops and focal lengths and it is just confusing the heck out of me. Is there a cheap lens that will actually make my photos look professional? Like, what is the best portrait lens I can get without going totally broke...

Just seeing this now. Honestly, you need the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G. It is a total game changer for portraits compared to that kit lens. The depth of field is way better for getting that blurry background look you want.

  • It is super sharp for the price
  • The f/1.8 aperture works great in low light indoors
  • Way more flattering for face shots than a wider lens.

Honestly, the kit lens is a total bummer for portraits. I remember being super annoyed when I first got my DSLR, expecting that creamy bokeh and just getting flat, boring shots instead. It felt like I wasted my money until I finally bit the bullet on a prime lens. With your budget, you have one clear path to fixing this before the party. Look into the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G.

  • It is way sharper than your kit lens.
  • That f/1.8 aperture lets in so much light and gives you that blurry background look you want.
  • It is super lightweight so it wont weigh you down at the birthday bash. Don't stress about the technical stuff right now, just get that lens, set it to the lowest number, and you will see the difference instantly.

Honestly, if you want that creamy background blur without spending a fortune, you gotta look at the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR or maybe hunt for a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. Since you have a D3500, that 85mm length is basically magic for portraits. It compresses the background way better than your kit lens ever could, which makes the subject pop and creates that soft, dreamy look you're chasing. Here is why this change feels so massive:

  • Distance: You can stand back a bit more so it doesnt feel like you are right in your niece's face, which usually results in way more natural expressions.
  • Compression: The focal length pulls the background closer to the subject, making it look much blurrier and more professional.
  • Light: You will be able to shoot in lower light without needing a flash, which is a lifesaver for indoor parties. Just a heads up, with a longer lens like an 85mm on your camera, keep an eye on your shutter speed so things dont get blurry from shaky hands. Try to keep it at least 1/125th or faster. Honestly, once you see how much better your niece's birthday photos look, you are never gonna wanna go back to that kit lens. Have a blast at the party, it is gonna be way better than you think!
