Best budget prime lens for Nikon DX crop sensor cameras?

Honestly I am so tired of reading forum threads and watching youtube reviews where everyone just disagrees with each other. I have a Nikon D5300 that I got used a few months ago and I am still stuck with that crappy 18-55mm kit lens and it is driving me crazy because every time I try to take a photo of my kids inside the house they just come out blurry or super grainy because the aperture is so high. I need something fast but I am on a super tight budget like strictly under 200 bucks because I also need to buy a new camera bag since my zipper broke last week.

I did some digging and everyone says to get the 35mm f/1.8G DX lens because it is made for my sensor but then I see other people swearing by the 50mm f/1.8G and saying it has better bokeh or whatever. But then I read that on a crop sensor like mine the 50mm acts like a 75mm and that sounds way too zoomed in for my tiny living room? I measured the space and if I use a 75mm equivalent I am basically gonna be standing in the kitchen trying to take a photo of the couch. But then people say the 35mm makes people's noses look big if you get too close for portraits so now I am just stuck and frustrated and dont want to waste my money.

I am in Chicago so I checked some local shops but they are all overpriced so I am probably looking at eBay or maybe MPB but I need to make a decision by next weekend because we have a family reunion coming up and I dont want to be the guy with the blurry dark photos again. My options seem to be:

  • Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G (seems practical but maybe too wide for faces?)
  • Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G (better quality but maybe too tight for indoors?)

Is there anything else I am missing that wont break the bank? Or should I just flip a coin at this point? Which one is actually gonna be more versatile for a frustrated dad just trying to get some decent indoor shots...

I went through this exact same thing last year with my D5300 and honestly it was kind of a letdown at first. Listening to the internet was a mistake because I bought the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G thinking it would be amazing for everything. Unfortunately, it was a nightmare for my small apartment. I had issues with being way too close to everyone and literally had to stand in the kitchen to get my kids in the frame. Missing those holiday shots was so frustrating. Eventually I traded it for the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G and it was much better for daily life. Go with the 35mm because:

  • it actually fits everyone in the frame indoors
  • focus is snappy enough for moving kids
  • you can find them used for around $130 which saves you money for that bag Dont overthink the distortion thing, unless youre inches away from their nose it looks fine... definitely grab the 35mm for the reunion.
