Ive been shooting with my Z6ii for about two years now, mostly doing landscape and some street stuff, but lately my cousin asked me to shoot some portraits for her wedding engagement and honestly Im super excited but a little nervous. I used to be a DSLR guy back in the day with my D750 and a classic 85mm 1.8, but since switching to mirrorless I havent really invested in a dedicated prime for people. I tried using my 24-70 f4 kit lens but the bokeh just isnt doing it for me, its a bit clinical and flat, you know? I want that creamy, dreamy look that really makes the subject pop off the background.
Im trying to get this sorted by mid-next month before the session. Budget-wise, I have about 800 to 1200 bucks to play with, maybe a little more if the glass is really worth it, but I dont need the crazy S-line f/1.2 price tags because honestly my bank account cant handle that right now. I live in Seattle so I usually shoot in pretty overcast, grey light which means I definitely need something that handles contrast well.
So here is what I need:
- Sharpness is key but I want nice skin rendering too.
- Fast autofocus because these guys move around a lot.
- Something in the 85mm range is my sweet spot.
- Build quality that isnt just plastic fantastic, though I know Z mount primes are generally solid.
Ive looked at the Z 85mm f/1.8 S and it seems like a no-brainer, but are there any third-party options that actually hold up? I keep hearing mixed things about the Viltrox stuff or even the older F-mount glass with the FTZ adapter, but is that a pain to deal with? Would love to hear what you guys think, especially if youve used these for actual client work. Is it worth saving a bit more for something else or should I just pull the trigger on the 1.8 S?
Honestly, if you are worried about the clinical look of that kit zoom, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S really is the king here. I have used it for years for paid portrait sessions and the way it renders skin tones in that flat Seattle light is honestly magic. It is just super contrasty without being harsh. I really wouldn't bother with the FTZ adapter setup if I were you. Dealing with extra bulk for an older Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G lens just isn't worth the headache when the native Z glass focuses so much faster on the Z6ii. The third-party stuff is cheaper, sure, but for an engagement shoot, you dont want your AF hunting when you need to nail the shot. Save yourself the stress and just grab the S-line prime.
Re: "Honestly, if you are worried about the clinical..."
- I actually disagree that the native S-line is your only move. If you want to keep cash in your pocket for other gear, look at the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 Z-mount.
- It is way cheaper than the Nikon version.
- Sharpness is surprisingly solid for the price.
- AF is decent enough for engagement shoots. Save the extra 500 bucks for a nice prime lens or extra batteries instead.
Honestly, skip the adapters and stick with the native glass. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S is honestly the best move for your Z6ii. It hits that sweet spot of sharpness and smooth bokeh you want. Viltrox is okay, but for client work, the AF reliability of the S-line is just better. Dont bother with F-mount glass unless you already own it, the balance just feels weird with the FTZ.
