I recently purchased a Nikon Z5 and I'm excited to explore its capabilities. As a newcomer to the Z mount system, I'm looking for recommendations on lenses to pair with my new camera. I'm interested in a versatile setup for various types of photography, including landscapes, portraits, and street photography. What are your top picks for native Z mount lenses? Thanks.
congrats on the Z5! its a solid little body for sure. before everyone starts listing off five grand worth of glass, what are you actually looking to spend? like, are you looking for the lightweight f/1.8 primes or are you thinking about those big pro f/2.8 zooms? also, do you see yourself shooting handheld mostly or do you use a tripod for those landscapes? since the Z5 sensor is a bit older, i tend to be a bit more cautious about choosing lenses that really maximize the light if you arent using a tripod. let us know your price range and itll be way easier to narrow this down without wasting your money on stuff you dont really need.
For landscape, get the Z 14-30mm f/4 S
For portrait, get the Z 85mm f/1.8 S
For street photography, get the Z 35mm f/1.4
Wait, what is your total budget for this setup? Knowing if you are looking for the budget-friendly compact glass or the high-end S-line stuff changes my answer quite a bit. I have been extremely satisfied with the Z5 for over a year now, but since it doesnt have a BSI sensor, choosing glass with good light transmission is pretty key for low light. If you want a solid kit that covers all those bases, here is what works well for me:
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is my go-to for landscapes. The extra reach over the standard 24-70mm is huge and the sharpness is honestly impressive across the whole frame.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is the best choice for street. It is so tiny it basically turns the Z5 into a jacket-pocket camera and the f/2 aperture is plenty fast.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S for portraits. Even though some prefer 85mm, this 50mm is technically one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has ever made. Honestly, that 24-120mm rarely leaves my camera body these days. I have no complaints about the rendering or the autofocus speed on the Z5 with that combo.
Would love to know this too
Saw this earlier but just now responding... honestly, ive tried many different setups on the Z5 over the last year and the biggest mistake i see people make is falling into the S-line trap. In my experience, you really dont need to spend a fortune to get the most out of this body. Check out sites like Photons to Photos or Dustin Abbott for real-world testing. Theyre way better resources than just looking at marketing materials. Also, dont sleep on the third-party brands. Comparing Nikon glass to what Tamron or Viltrox are putting out right now, you can save a massive amount of cash without losing much quality. One word of caution though: if youre planning on doing a lot of street photography, be careful with using adapted F-mount lenses. The FTZ adapter works, but it adds so much bulk that it kinda defeats the purpose of having a mirrorless setup. Keep it native if you can, just look at the non-S lenses first.
