I recently purchased a Nikon Z5 mirrorless camera and am interested in getting into macro photography. I mainly shoot flowers, insects, and other small subjects like jewelry or textures. I want to capture impressive details and magnification.
Can anyone recommend a great macro lens that would work well with my Nikon Z5? I'm willing to spend around $500-800 for a lens. I know Nikon makes a Z MC 105mm 2.8 VR S macro lens but that is over my budget. I could possibly stretch for it if you feel it would be that much better than third party options.
Honestly been super happy with my setup lately. before i dive in tho, are you strictly looking for native Z mount glass or are you okay with using the FTZ adapter? Knowing if you need autofocus for those insects would also help narrow it down since manual is often better for macro anyway... Since you want to stay under that 800 mark, here is what i suggest based on my experience:
- Look for a used Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD. I have used this for a long time and the results are pro level. You can find them for a steal used.
- Another solid choice is the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro. It works great on the Z5 with the adapter and the image stabilization is quite reliable. I have had the Tamron for over a year now and honestly have no complaints. It handles jewelry and textures perfectly. It is a very methodical way to get into macro without blowing the whole budget on the expensive Nikon S-line lens.
Like someone mentioned, the 50mm is a solid piece of glass, but i gotta disagree on it being the best fit for insects. The working distance is just way too short. Youll end up bumping into your subject before you get the shot. tbh i have been very satisfied with the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO instead. its native Z mount and honestly wipes the floor with the Nikon 105mm when it comes to magnification. You get 2:1 ratio instead of just 1:1 which is huge for textures. The technical side of it is great too. It has an apochromatic design so you wont see any of that annoying purple fringing on shiny stuff like jewelry facets. Yea it is manual focus only but on a Z5 with focus peaking thats basically a non issue for macro work anyway. Its well within your $500-800 range and the build quality is tank-like. No complaints here after using it for six months for my flower shots.
