My old 85mm 1.8G just died on me and I am panicking because I have a wedding in Chicago this Saturday. I've been a Nikon shooter forever but never really branched out from the basic primes. Since I have to buy a new one anyway I'm looking for a serious upgrade for my D850 that can handle low light without hunting for focus.

  • Budget: Max $1100
  • Must be sharp at f/1.4 or f/1.8
  • Fast AF is non-negotiable

I've heard the Sigma 85mm Art is amazing but it's huge, is the Nikon 85mm 1.4G worth the extra cash even now? I really need to order this tonight so it arrives in time...

Yo, I totally feel that panic. Weddings are stressful enough without gear failing right before the big day. I’ve shot plenty of ceremonies with the D850 and honestly, weight becomes a massive factor by hour six. I once hauled a heavy setup around a humid venue all day and my wrist was basically useless by the reception... you really gotta think about the ergonomics. If you are looking at the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Nikon F, just be careful about the bulk. It is a total brick. While it's incredibly sharp, swinging that thing around a dark Chicago ballroom is a workout you might not want. I would suggest looking at the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD for Nikon F as a sleeper pick.

  • The Vibration Compensation is a total lifesaver when you’re tired and shooting low shutter speeds.
  • Its way more balanced on the D850 than the Sigma.
  • Focus is sticky and fast, even when the lights go down. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G has that legendary bokeh, but the AF tech feels a bit dated now and it might hunt more than you'd like. Whatever you grab, make sure to run a quick AF fine-tune as soon as it arrives... you dont want to realize it's back-focusing during the vows.
