I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to the Canon R8 from my old crop sensor setup and honestly the autofocus is blowing my mind but my old EF glass feels so clunky with the adapter and I'm starting to regret not planning my lens transition better. I've got a huge family portrait session coming up in two weeks in a local botanical garden and I'm really worried my current 50mm is gonna feel too short now that I'm on full frame. I need a solid prime that actually balances well on the R8 because the body is so light and my old 85mm 1.8 feels like a brick on there.
Here is what I am dealing with:
- Budget is strictly under $700 right now after buying the body
- Needs to be fast enough for some background separation in busy parks
- Native RF mount preferred so I can actually use the eye tracking features properly
- Not too heavy because I'll be hiking around for three hours
I keep looking at the RF 85mm f2 Macro but I've heard some mixed things about the AF motor speed compared to the L series stuff which I definitely cant afford right now. Does it hunt as bad as people say or am I just overthinking this? I really need something reliable before the 15th...
- I recently shot a garden wedding with the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM and loved it!
- Its super light and the eye-tracking is honestly amazing for portraits!
@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly though, I am stuck with the exact same dilemma right now and it is driving me nuts. I have been shooting for over fifteen years and usually I have my kit dialed in, but the R8 is such a weird beast because of the weight. I have been looking for weeks and still dont know what to do about the lens gap. Here is what I am struggling with:
- My old Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM feels like a giant brick with the adapter
- I am terrified the AF on the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is gonna be too slow for my workflow
- I just dont have the cash for the L series glass right now Tbh I have been refreshing pages for a month trying to find a real answer. It is so frustrating being stuck in this limbo... been dealing with this since I got the body and still haven't found a setup that feels right. I really hope someone actually tests these properly because I am just as lost as you are.
