honestly i am so over this 28-70mm kit lens that came with my a7iii it is literally driving me insane at this point. i took it to my nieces soccer game last weekend and half the shots are just... blurry? like not even motion blur just soft and gross and the autofocus keeps hunting like it has no idea what its looking at even in broad daylight. i thought it was me but i borrowed a friends prime and it was fine so yeah the lens is just garbage and i cant deal with it anymore.
im leaving for a three week trip to scotland in literally ten days and i am panicking because i cannot take this piece of junk with me. i need something that can actually handle the mist and the low light in the pubs but also get those wide landscape shots of the highlands without me having to stop and swap lenses every five minutes because honestly i know ill just get dust on my sensor if i try to change things out in the wind and rain over there. i really need:
- fast autofocus that actually hits the target
- decent low light performance for indoor stuff
- enough range to go from wide to a bit of a zoom
- something that feels solid but wont break my neck
ive been looking at the tamron 28-75 g2 because people say its a great value but then i see others swearing by the sigma 24-70 art and then theres the sony 24-105 f4 which sounds convenient but i worry about that f4 being too slow when the sun goes down or when im indoors. my budget is capped at about 1100 bucks maybe 1200 if i stretch it or find a good used deal locally here in chicago before i fly out. i just want one lens that can stay on the camera like 90% of the time and actually give me sharp results for once and i dont have time to watch another fifty youtube reviews that all contradict each other.
what is the absolute best all-around zoom for the e-mount that wont make me want to throw my camera into a loch...
I totally get the kit lens frustration. I took mine on a hiking trip a few years back and it was a total nightmare in the overcast woods. Everything looked muddy and the autofocus just died when the light dipped. Since youre headed to Scotland, you really need to be careful with that weather. I personally ended up getting the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 and it might be your best bet for the budget. I was worried about the build at first, but it survived a week of misty cliffs without a hiccup and it is light enough for long treks. I would suggest staying away from the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS for those dark pubs. f/4 sounds okay on paper but once you're inside a dim tavern, you'll be cranking your ISO way too high. Just make sure to check for dust issues if you buy a used Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art tho... some early units had sealing problems.
