so sorry if this is a totally dumb question but i just got a nikon d3500 and i have no idea where to start with lenses. the one that came in the box is okay i guess but i really want that blurry background look for my sisters wedding which is literally in ten days!! i am super stressed because i dont have much money to spend maybe like $150 or $200 max if i stretch it. i keep seeing stuff about 35mm or 50mm but what does that even mean for my camera?
- i need something cheap
- good for people photos
- easy for a beginner to use
can anyone just tell me what to buy before i panic? i dont want to get the wrong thing and waste my money...
Since you are using a D3500, you have to keep the 1.5x crop factor in mind. Focal lengths on DX sensors are multiplied by 1.5 to get the actual field of view. If you want that blurry background, you need a wide aperture like f/1.8. For your budget, the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is the most logical choice. It gives you a roughly 52mm equivalent view which is very natural for general shots and group photos at a wedding. If you prefer tighter shots of people, look at the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G. It acts like a 75mm lens on your camera, which is great for portraits but might feel too cramped if youre in a small room. Crucially, you must stick to AF-S or AF-P lenses. Your D3500 doesnt have an internal focus motor, so older AF-D series lenses wont autofocus at all. Tbh, I would just grab the 35mm. Its sharper than your kit lens and handles low light much better. Both of these are usually under $200 used if you check places like MPB. Quick tip: set your camera to Aperture Priority (the A on the dial) and turn the dial until it says 1.8. Thats how you get the blur you're looking for.
> i need something cheap Unfortunately, I once bought a cheap Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8N and it missed focus during a family party. Super annoying. Just find a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G for the wedding.
Would love to know this too
