Just found this. I actually disagree with using a heavy zoom for Italy. Be careful with bulk; I would suggest the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 for those tight street shots tho.

Late to the party but gotta chime in since you leave so soon. Are you planning on doing much shooting at night or just during the day? I ask because I once dragged a heavy setup through Rome and it was a total disaster... my shoulder was killing me and I missed half the vibe because I was fussing with my bag. Unfortunately, some of the pro lenses people love are just way too bulky for those tiny Italian streets.

  • Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is probably your best bet. Its tiny and super cheap. I had some minor issues with flare when shooting directly into street lights, but for the price, its hard to beat.
  • Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is the standard choice. You can find it used within your budget easy. Honestly though, f/4 was not as good as expected for those dark cathedrals and narrow alleys. Stay light. Italy is all about walking and honestly, youll hate yourself if you bring a massive kit. The 40mm is basically invisible on the Z5 and wont break the bank.
