Im honestly so fed up with carrying three heavy prime lenses everywhere I go. Just got back from a shoot in rainy Oregon and missed half the landscape shots because I was constantly swapping glass to get the right framing and worrying about dust on my D850 sensor. It is a beast of a camera but this setup is just killing my back and ruining my workflow. I need to simplify before my trip to Iceland next month. Budget is around 1500 dollars.
What is the absolute best all-around walkaround lens for the D850 that can actually handle the high resolution?
I actually started out trying to save some budget with third party lenses, but unfortunately I had major autofocus consistency issues on my D850. The sharpness just was not as good as expected due to constant micro-adjustment problems, which is a nightmare for landscape work. For Iceland, you really need absolute reliability and weather sealing. Honestly, I would look for a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR. It should fit your 1500 dollar budget if you buy used. The optics easily resolve the 45.7 megapixels, and the sealing is excellent. The VR is also a lifesaver in windy conditions. It is heavy, but it replaces your primes and keeps your sensor clean.
^ This. Unfortunately, the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 had disappointing edge resolution. I bought a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR for 1200, which resolves the sensor far better.
Ive been super happy with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR on my D850. It just works well.
