Which prime lens is best for portraits on a Nikon DSLR?

I've been staring at my screen for hours trying to pick a lens for my D7500 and I'm honestly just getting more stressed out. My sisters graduation is in three weeks and I really want some nice shots but I only have the basic kit lens. I read that the 50mm f1.8 is the go-to because it's cheap but then other people say the 85mm is the real portrait king for that blurry background. Since I'm on a crop sensor though wont the 85mm be like way too zoomed in for taking photos at the party? I have about $350 saved and I'm so scared of making the wrong choice. Which one is actually better for a beginner doing portraits?

I'd be careful with an 85mm on your D7500... it basically turns into a 127mm lens which is way too tight for indoor parties. I would suggest the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G instead. It's the safer bet for a beginner and honestly much more versatile. You'll still get that lovely bokeh without hitting the walls.
