So I finally bit the bullet and traded in my old D750 for a Z6ii and I am honestly kinda overwhelmed by the glass options now. I am heading to Tokyo in about three weeks and I really dont want to be that person lugging around a huge bag of lenses while my wife is trying to enjoy the shrines. I need one lens that can basically live on the camera for the whole trip. Street stuff, food shots, maybe some landscape if we go near Fuji. I got about $1100 to spend on this which is why I am looking at these two specifically.
I spent hours on YouTube and Reddit looking at reviews. Everyone seems to swear by the 24-120mm f/4 S because its part of the S-line and supposedly super sharp across the whole frame but then I see people saying the 24-200mm f/4-6.3 is the ultimate travel king because of that extra reach. It is hard to know who to believe. I am really worried the 24-200 might be too slow in low light once it ramps up to that 6.3 aperture at the long end especially if I am doing night markets or dimly lit restaurants. Like is the f/4 constant aperture actually that much of a lifesaver or am I overthinking the ISO performance of the Z sensors?
Then there is the 24-70mm f/4 that comes as a kit lens which is way cheaper but I feel like 70mm is just too short for what I want to do. I am basically looking for that perfect balance where I dont feel like I am missing shots because I didnt bring a second lens. If you guys had to pick just one for a month-long trip where you are walking 20k steps a day what would it be? Is the image quality jump on the S-line lens actually noticeable for someone who isnt printing giant posters? Just trying to get my kit sorted before my flight leaves next month...
I was honestly pretty disappointed with that 24-200mm... I had issues with the zoom creep on a trip last year and it felt kinda fragile. Unfortunately, the edge sharpness just isnt as good as expected. To save money:
- find a used Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S
- look at the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 for low light Both are way more reliable for your budget than that superzoom.
^ This. Also, i had issues with the bulk of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S for street stuff. Unfortunately, its not as good as expected when you are exhausted from walking.
- 24-120mm: stellar glass but a lead weight by dinner.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8: way faster for dark ramen shops. Id actually grab the 28-75mm. You wont miss the reach as much as that extra light in those tight alleys...
I would suggest the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S for your trip. Be careful with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR because f/6.3 kicks in sooner than you expect, which might be a real struggle in dim Tokyo restaurants.
- Constant f/4 is vital for night shots
- S-line optics are just noticeably cleaner Make sure to prioritize that aperture speed over the extra reach for those shrines.
