What is the best all-around lens for the Nikon Z series that wont break my back or my bank account? I finally pulled the trigger on a Z6ii and I am super hyped for my trip to Japan this November but honestly I am paralyzed by the lens options right now. I really just want one single lens that can stay on the camera like 90% of the time because I hate swapping glass when I am walking through busy streets or hiking up around Kyoto.

I did some digging and saw everyone talking about the 24-120mm f/4 S lens being the gold standard for travel but then I also see a ton of people saying the 24-70mm f/4 is almost as sharp and way cheaper on the used market. Like literally half the price. My budget is roughly $1,100 and I could swing the 24-120 if it is actually that much better but is it too heavy for all day carry? I also saw some people mention the 28-75 f2.8 for the better bokeh but then I lose that wide end at 24mm which feels important for tight city streets.

I am mostly doing street photography and some nature shots while we are out there and I just cant decide if the extra 50mm on the long end of the 120 is worth the extra bulk and cash or if I should just get the cheap 24-70 and spend the rest of my money on ramen and trains lol. Anyone actually used both and can tell me if the 24-120 is worth the hype for a one-lens setup?

The Z6ii is a solid choice for Japan. I have used both lenses extensively and the decision usually comes down to whether you prioritize reach or portability. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is arguably the most versatile option for your budget and honestly, it stays on my camera almost 100% of the time.

  • The 120mm focal length allows for better compression in tight Kyoto streets and helps isolate subjects.
  • It maintains a constant f/4 aperture which is helpful for consistent exposure while zooming.
  • The build quality is S-line standard, meaning it handles flare and chromatic aberration very well even in harsh light. In contrast, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is much smaller and lighter. You can find it used for around $400, which is a significant saving if you want to spend more on your actual trip. It is sharp enough for most street photography, but you will likely find yourself wishing for more reach when shooting architecture or distant landscapes from the top of Fushimi Inari. If you are walking 20k steps a day, the weight difference is about 130g. Most people dont find that deal-breaking when paired with a comfortable strap like the Peak Design Slide Lite. If you want one lens that does it all without needing to swap glass in busy crowds, the 24-120mm is the more practical tool. Let me know if you need more details on how it handles low light vs that 2.8 you mentioned.
