Is there a single lens for the Z-mount that actually lives up to the hype, or am I gonna have to bite the bullet and carry a bag full of glass? Im moving from an old DSLR setup to a Z6II and need something that handles everything from street shots to the occasional portrait of my dog.
Im currently torn between the 24-120mm f/4 S and the 24-70mm f/2.8 S. I know the 2.8 is the gold standard for sharpness, but its so heavy and expensive that it makes me hesitate, especially since my budget is strictly under 2k. The 24-120mm gives me way more reach for travel, which is great because I have a trip to Japan coming up in three months, but Im worried I will miss that extra stop of light when Im shooting indoors at night.
Maybe I should just get the 24-70 f/4 kit lens and save the cash for a prime later? Its just tough because I really dont want to be swapping lenses on the street while traveling. Anyone here use the 24-120 as their main walkaround lens and regret the f/4 aperture, or is the versatility worth the trade-off?
Honestly, skip the heavy pro glass if you want to actually enjoy Japan. I traveled with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S last year and it changed how I shoot. Over the years I have lugged around those massive f/2.8 zooms, but they just end up staying in the hotel safe because they feel like an anchor around your neck by mid-afternoon. Here is why the 24-120mm is the winner:
- The reach is a game changer for street photography when you cant get close to your subject.
- You wont miss that extra stop of light as much as you think with the Z6II high ISO performance.
- It saves you so much cash compared to the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S that you can grab a cheap prime for night shots. If you are worried about the dark, just grab a used Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 to toss in your pocket. It is tiny, super sharp, and costs next to nothing compared to the pro zooms. I usually keep the zoom on my camera all day and only swap to the little prime when the sun goes down or I want that creamy background for a dog portrait. Trust me, dont overthink the specs. The versatility of the 120mm end is way more useful for travel than that extra f-stop you might only use once in a blue moon. Youre gonna love it.
Had a moment to think about this, and honestly, the f/4 aperture isnt the dealbreaker people make it out to be on the Z6II. The high ISO performance is so clean these days.
- The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is optically impressive across the entire range.
- If you save cash by skipping the f/2.8, you could grab the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 for super low-light street shots. That combo covers way more ground for your Japan trip.
Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.

Re: "Can confirm this works."
- Honestly, I think people are being a bit too optimistic. I have put some serious miles on these lenses and frankly, I was disappointed by the sharpness on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S when pushing it to the long end. It just lacks that clinical bite you get from the pro glass. Here is how they actually stack up based on my own frustration with the weight vs quality trade-off:
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is incredible optically, but carry it for ten hours in Tokyo and you will hate your life. It is not worth the neck pain for street photography.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S has the reach, but dont expect the contrast to blow you away compared to the 2.8. Basically, you are trading professional build quality and light gathering for convenience and extra range.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is okay, but frankly, it felt like a standard kit lens that left me wanting more reach 90 percent of the time. If you are set on a single lens, just grab the 24-120 and keep your expectations managed. Its definitely not the perfect pro optic everyone claims it is.
