What is actually the sharpest Nikon lens for landscape work right now? I am stressing out because I have a big trip to Iceland in three weeks and my current glass just isnt cutting it for those wide mountain shots. I have been looking at the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S because everyone online says it is perfect, but then I read a thread somewhere that the 20mm prime might be way sharper corner to corner. My budget is around 2500 bucks and I really dont want to blow it on the wrong thing before I leave. Is the zoom actually comparable or am I gonna regret not just getting the prime...?
Honestly, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is convenient, but I had issues with corner softness at the widest end. It just wasn't as sharp as I expected for landscape work. For edge-to-edge clarity, you should prioritize the prime.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S This prime is consistently sharper. Unfortunately, the zoom adds weight and distortion you probably dont want for those mountain shots.
Honestly, if you are heading to Iceland, just grab the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S and save your cash. Zoom lenses are cool, but you dont really need that extra range if you are willing to move your feet. The prime is way sharper and lighter for hiking trails. Just be careful with filters on the zoom front elements too, they can be a total pain. Definitely go prime.
> I have been looking at the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S because everyone online says it is perfect Honestly, the zoom is amazing for utility, but if you want that pixel-peeping perfection, check out the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S. I took it to the Dolomites last year and the MTF charts dont lie, it is insanely sharp. Just stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 for maximum depth of field and you'll be set!
