So Ive been trying to figure out which lens to grab for my D5600 before my sisters graduation party in a few weeks. Im in the Chicago area and I really want to get some of those nice blurry background shots but my budget is pretty tight like maybe 250 bucks max. I did some digging and everyone keeps mentioning the 35mm f/1.8G and the 50mm f/1.8G.
My logic was that the 35mm would be better because its wider and people say its the standard for DX cameras but then I read a thread where someone said it makes peoples faces look a bit distorted if you get too close for a headshot. That kinda scared me off. But then if I go with the 50mm its effectively like a 75mm on my crop sensor right? Im worried that if we are indoors at the restaurant I wont be able to back up far enough to actually fit her in the frame.
I also saw some older AF-D lenses for like 100 dollars but I think those wont autofocus on my D5600 since it doesnt have the internal motor? Everything is a bit confusing because some people say buy the 50 and others say the 50 is too long for DX. What is actually the best bang for your buck if I just want her to pop from the background without having to stand in the next room?
In my experience, you should definitely skip those old AF-D lenses. Over the years I've found these are your safest bets:
- Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G: Good for groups but distorts faces in close-ups.
- Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G: Much better for that blurry background you want. Go with the 50mm. Its more reliable for flattering portraits even if its a bit tight indoors.
